Frequently Asked Questions

For Research results: If you have created a summary slide of your result for a presentation or Center highlight and/or if you have an image of researchers taking measurements in the field we strongly encourage you to upload them.  Leadership looking to include results in a presentation appreciate having clear figures and/or images available.

For Program results: If you have photos from the event (a training, or a meeting or an awards ceremony) or again a summary  graphic or slide they are very appreciated

Go Search the Database on the Research Results main page and select the parameters of your search.  You can search by a number of criteria (keyword, name of the person who created the entry, the HQ Science Focus Area and/or Program, the publication status of the result, the Center associated with the result) and you can limit your search to a publication window (this refers to the publication date for the result not the date on which the entry was created).

The comments section is primarily for Program Managers or Earth science communicators who are looking for content. If they come across your research result or program update and decide to use it for either internal awareness or external communications, they are encouraged to leave a comment indicating that the piece of information is going to be used.

This helps increase transparency between scientists, Program Managers, and communicators, so that scientists know how their research or program update is being used.

Yes.

You can do this by clicking on "My Account" at the bottom of the menu and then clicking on Results  or Program Updates. You will be able to see all of the research results and program updates that you have submitted from there. Simply click on the content that you would like to update, and select "Edit" in the upper left.

Contact the Site Administrator to request Portal access for a principal investigator (PI) that you would like to submit a result from NASA-funded research.

Please include their name, email address, institution, and reason for needing to access the portal, along with the sponsoring NASA employee's name and contact information.

Yes.

For those of you submitting from JPL, this is equivalent to your process for clearing documents through the Unlimited Release System.

If you would like to submit a research result to the Results Portal that has not yet cleared DAA Approval (NF 1676), do NOT check the box for DAA Approval (NF 1676) compliance on the Results Database submission form under the "Publication Stage" tab.

If you leave this box blank, the result will be marked as [NO 1676], signaling that it is for internal awareness only and is not permitted for external communication.

You can further restrict access to this sensitive information by selecting "Restrict Access" also on the Results Database submission form.

For more information on DAA Approval (NF 1676), please visit: https://inside.nasa.gov/sti/faq

Yes.

You can Restrict Access to research results or program updates that you only want certain NASA centers to see.

To do this, select the "Restrict Access" option on either the Results Database submission page or the Program Updates Database submission page, and select which centers you would like to have access. Only Results Portal users with login credentials from those centers will be able to see the research result or program update.

These submissions will appear as [RESTRICTED] within the database, so people who can view the results will know that they contain sensitive information that is not permitted for external communications.

You may also submit results for internal awareness that have not yet cleared the your Center's publication review process (DAA Approval (NF 1676) or URS at JPL) To do this, do NOT check the box for DAA Approval (NF 1676) compliance on the Results Database submission form under the "Publication Stage" tab. If you are a NASA funded PI who is not based at a NASA Center and you do not have Center co-authors on your result you can click the box for DAA Approval/ Not Applicable as you are not required to undergo the Center review process.

If you leave that box blank, the result will also be marked as [NO 1676], signaling that it is for internal awareness only and is not permitted for external communication.

An Earth science research result includes published or unpublished results that either:

  1. Tells us something about the Earth
  2. Explains or describes an improvement to an instrument, model, algorithm, or data analysis technique
  3. Calibrates and/or validates sensors or techniques used in Earth system science

You can submit an Earth science research result to the Results Database by clicking Submit a Result

A program update includes general updates that you would like NASA headquarters to know about, but are not Earth science research results, including:

  1. Conferences attended and presentations given
  2. Mission milestones or new partnerships
  3. Awards received

You can submit a program update to the Program Updates Database by clicking Submit a Program Update

The short answer: Anytime you'd like.

The long answer: To help ease the transition to the Results Portal, NASA centers are encouraged to rely on their current mechanisms and channels they use to submit highlights to NASA headquarters in order to submit to the Results Portal. Therefore, if your center typically submits highlights to NASA headquarters on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or ad hoc basis, feel free to stick that schedule.

You can use the Results Database to submit Earth science research results to the Results Portal. These include published or unpublished results from NASA-funded research that either:

  1. Tell us something about the Earth
  2. Describe an improvement to an instrument, model, algorithm, or data analysis technique
  3. Calibrate and/or validate sensors or techniques used in Earth system science

You can use the Program Updates Database to submit program updates from your NASA center to the Results Portal. These include general updates that NASA centers would like NASA headquarters to know about, but are not Earth science research results, including:

  1. Conferences attended and presentations given
  2. Mission milestones or new partnerships
  3. Awards received

Please note, you can restrict access to anything you submit so that only those from within your center or NASA headquarters can see content that is sensitive or unpublished. Content that is restricted or has not completed Center permission to publish review (DAA Approval (NF 1676) or URS at JPL) will be marked as [RESTRICTED] and [NO 1676], respectively, and is not permitted for external communications.

NASA scientists and NASA-funded principal investigators (PIs) should submit Earth science research results to the Results Portal. NASA administrators or other internal communications specialists may also submit on behalf of scientists to the Results Portal.

NASA centers should rely on the existing mechanisms and channels that they currently use to submit highlights to NASA headquarters to submit to the Results Portal.

For example, if your center currently collects research results and/or program updates from different labs or PIs to send to NASA headquarters, you should continue to collect research results and/or program updates from those same labs or PIs, but submit them through either the Results Database or the Program Updates Database rather than emailing them or posting them to disparate websites.

Uploading your research results and/or program updates to the Results Portal will ensure they will be archived and made searchable for later reference and use.

The Earth Science Research Results Portal (Results Portal) is an internal, centralized repository of NASA-funded Earth Science research results and program updates sent to NASA headquarters from NASA centers and principal investigators (PIs).

The Results Portal leverages existing protocols for submitting these highlights and stores them in one centralized place in a standardized format.

Only those with login credentials from NASA centers or NASA-funded PIs can request access to the Portal.

The Results Portal is for internal use only; therefore, only people within NASA or NASA-funded principal investigators (PIs) are permitted to have logins and may have access to this site. Different groups will use the Results Portal for different purposes:

  • NASA Scientists and NASA-funded PIs: NASA scientists at NASA Centers and NASA-funded PIs off Centers can use the Results Portal to keep NASA headquarters up-to-date on their research. They can also use it to raise the profile of their research, since Earth science communicators will use the Results Portal to search for content for online news features, social media campaigns, and more.
  • NASA Earth Science Division Leadership: NASA Earth Science Division (ESD) Associate Directors, Focus Area Leads, Program Managers and more will have access to the Results Portal to find content for various monthly and annual reports. These include reports for Science Mission Directorate (SMD) and agency-wide leadership, as well as congressional audiences. Some of these reporting mechanisms include the SMD Monthly Status Review (MSR), SMD Weekly Updates, the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) Annual Report, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) reporting, and more. They can also search the Results Portal for interesting results to include in scientific presentations.

  • NASA Earth Science Communicators and Content Producers: NASA's public affairs officers, science writers, digital media specialists and more can search for research results that are not embargoed for content for upcoming news features, press releases, handouts, and more.

If you would like to request access to the Results Portal for someone else, please contact the Site Administrator and include their name, email address, institution, and reason for needing to access the Results Portal, along with your own name and contact information.
